![]() The large variety of heroes and the customization element really are Darkspore's strongest points. This is a fairly simple system compared to other games in the genre, making it easy for players of any level to understand. In addition to the type and class, each hero also has four unique abilities it can use in a fight. Darkspore of the same genesis type as your hero will do twice the damage, so you have to strategize the type of heroes you take into each level. Each of your heroes has one of five genesis types, and one of three classes. You only control one hero at a time, though you can take three of them into and switch between them at any time. The use of the existing tech for the Creature Creator makes the customization of heroes simple and intuitive. In addition there are weapons and armor to equip as well. Like in Spore, different body parts change your hero's stats. While you can't create beings from scratch, you can change how they look by adding or removing different items or changing their color and markings. Darkspore uses a version of the Spore Creature Creator for the customization. This is where the "spore" element comes in. Darkspore's major feature is the ability to unlock and customize 25 different genetic heroes, each of which have four variations. Gameplay is thankfully better than the story. You don't interact with the AI or any of your creatures, so the story doesn't feel like much more than window dressing that's used to move you along to the next planet and more Darkspore battles. Since this is all done in exposition, it's not very engaging. ![]() Most of the time, your AI is telling you the backstory, giving brief snippets about the planets you'll explore and recalling the events that led to the current situation. Play As far as story goes, Darkspore doesn't get much more interesting than that.
